Defined, Undefined, and Completely Open: The Three States

Human Design recognises three distinct states for a Center: (1) Defined (colored) — consistently active, self-generating, fixed theme. This is who you are. (2) Undefined (white with activated hanging Gates) — variable, takes in and amplifies others' energy in this domain. A source of wisdom and of conditioning. (3) Completely Open (white with NO activated Gates) — the most vulnerable to conditioning and yet potentially the greatest source of wisdom. A completely open Center has no reference point of its own — it is a pure blank slate. These people can be profoundly wise about the domain of that Center precisely because they have no fixed definition to compare against. Complete openness is rare and extremely significant when it appears.
